November/December Newsletter 2016

posted Dec 12, 2016, 9:38 PM by Katie Parmenter   [ updated Dec 12, 2016, 9:41 PM ]

Details and News:

Together we have learned so much about ancient Greek culture this past month.  We have been sharing our 7 Wonders of Me posters.  We learned about the different styles of greek columns and architecture and how that style is still used all around us today, we read Greek myths, made up our own in a writing activity to share and present to the class,  and made our own lekythos. We will finish up our Greek study next week with our own version of the Greek Olympics.

Our Halloween Extravaganza was a great day of fun had by all - thank you all for your participation!  We also had our very first emergency drill and discussed and practiced how to handle an emergency at school with duck and cover, then evacuating the building to the field.  The first round of elective rotations with science, art and gardening has ended.

Writing Prompts and Story Outlines

Each week you will find one or two writing prompts, outlines, or guides in the weekly update.  Please use the ones you think are relevant for your child.  These are not assignments – they are supports for you in your teaching of writing to your child. We are trying to encourage MUCH more writing in general for everyone.

Stone Soup is a magazine by and for kids. It is published 6 times per year. Preparing writing for submission to the magazine would be good inspiration for writing creative stories and poems. Here is a link to how to submit writing:

Parent Advisory Committee: Charter Fall Creek Office  3-4pm

From Rhonda:  Dr. Bruton will come to share the State of the District. Additional focus will be the WASC report, and learning more about LCFF goals and LCAP supplemental funds.  It is the one committee that the Charter has where parent representatives from every program meet to learn more about the details of the Charter and provide input to me regarding pertinent program needs requests  We meet once a month, (sometimes more) so that we can collectively discuss the guiding documents of the Charter School and so I can hear from you about the Charter program you and your child is involved in.

All parents who are interested are welcome, but we particularly need representation from the Quail Hollow programs.  Here is a note from one of our parent representatives:

“First it was Common Core; then it was WASC and now it is LCAP. There have been so many recent policy changes. Along with the frustration that comes with change, these new laws and policies have turned out to have some exciting silver linings. The charter needs YOU to be a voice in establishing and maintaining the vision and goals for this awesome Charter School. Come and join us!”   There will be chocolate. :)
